  • I was inspired by Egyptian Kufic calligraphy, Muslim prayer rugs, and fonts that are relics of the religious imperialism described in Dune.

I chose hide-textured vinyl, cinnamon, and copper leaf to create a unique olfactory experience and a look as authoritative as a bible. Dune contains themes of authority, control, free-will, and endless political struggles over power and resources. Inspired by cycles, I created circular illustrations that show Arrakeen weapons and Shai Hulud (sand worms) which are both the origin of the resource and the mistaken enemy of the Imperial Alliance. The closed circular gun motif illustrates Paul’s enmeshment with the jihad which he desperately tries to avoid. The mouse represents Paul and his integration into Fremen culture as an outsider.
