Rebrand for a Sophomore Release
Problem to Solve
Experimental analog synth band NightNight sought a rebrand after the release of their debut “Love Decayed” whose single “Ashes” topped German dance charts in 2023, but had limited success elsewhere due to low promotion. As NightNight teams up with Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Sunroof),
strong branding was needed to promote the sophomore release while shopping it around to new record labels for wider distribution.
The Sound
NightNight’s sound is influenced by trip-hop, goth, and shoegaze. All sounds are made using analog synths and organic sounds. Rhythms are created by recording plasma wave shocks to palo santo. The lyrics bear witness to the current state of our world, and observe physical and metaphorical transformations in states of being.

Brand Guide
Consistency Meets Experimentation
Since NightNight’s style is experimental, the brand needs three substyles that capture the essence of the music, depending on the mood of each upcoming single: minimal, layered, and distorted. Typography is clean, with ample leading, set in Brother 1816 Printed for a hand-touched look that supports the analog method of creation. Textures are soft and layered, referring to organic and natural material. I used a Japanese ink marbling technique called Suminagashi to create bespoke textures that appear in the digital, print, and collateral materials, which I accomplished by creating a 15’ x 20’ muslin backdrop to be used for the upcoming tour, along with photo and music video backgrounds to maintain that consistent hand crafted look.

Art Direction
A Light Touch: Maximum Creativity
Since our team is distributed worldwide (Seattle, New York, London), I remotely directed the photo and video team, Madison Carroll and Kit Volta. Since Madison and Kit are well-established creatives who were chosen for their vision, my goal was to provide enough direction to provide a consistent scaffold while allowing plenty of room for the creative agency that lends itself so well to experimental music. I accomplished this by creating a custom backdrop with NightNight’s brand texture and by setting lighting and framing standards to facilitate iterative use of photo/video collateral for social promos and of course the album design.
